In a proactive move to safeguard marine biodiversity, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has launched a fish release campaign in the waters of the Sealine Nature Reserve, located in southern Qatar.
The initiative was carried out through MECC’s Department of Natural Reserves and the Marine Protection Department, in collaboration with the Aquatic Research Center under the Ministry of Municipality.
This campaign forms part of MECC’s broader environmental strategy aimed at conserving marine ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity across Qatar’s nature reserves. It aligns with the goals of the Qatar National Vision for environmental sustainability and the responsible use of natural resources for future generations.
The fish release effort is a key step in replenishing local fish stocks, contributing to national food security. The selection of fish species and the timing of their release were based on scientific studies conducted by the Aquatic Research Center, ensuring compatibility with the reserve’s environmental conditions and supporting the long-term success of the initiative.
MECC continues to play a leading role in such environmental efforts, providing direct oversight through its specialized departments. The ministry’s marine protection strategy includes preserving natural habitats, rehabilitating degraded ecosystems, and mitigating human impact on coastal and marine areas.
Sealine Nature Reserve is recognized as one of Qatar’s vital ecological sites, known for its rich biodiversity and unique environmental features. Its suitability for projects that balance conservation with sustainable resource development makes it an ideal location for this campaign.
The ministry affirmed its commitment to monitoring the ecological impact of the fish release, with regular reporting to assess environmental benefits and ensure the campaign’s effectiveness.
