The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf), through its Department of Islamic Research and Studies, will convene a seminar on Tuesday titled “The Present and Future of the Arabic Language in the Islamic World.” The event will bring together distinguished scholars and academics from Qatar University who specialize in Arabic language and its related disciplines.
Sheikh Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al-Thani, Director of the Department of Islamic Research and Studies, described the seminar as a collaborative intellectual initiative aimed at revitalizing the Arabic language and reinforcing its cultural and civilizational foundations. He emphasized that the event is part of a broader effort to restore Arabic to its central role in the Muslim world.
This seminar marks the first in a planned annual series under the theme “In Clear Arabic,” reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to elevating the status of Arabic the language of the Holy Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah and reaffirming its significance in Islamic scholarship, history, and civilization.
The seminar will be held at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque and will explore its central theme through three key sessions:
Dr. Luay Ali Khalil, Professor of Cultural Criticism and Narratology, will lead the first session, examining the connection between Arabic and the cultural identity of the Muslim nation. His presentation will address the role of language unifying intellectual and cultural thought through the Quran, its historical contribution to shaping collective identity, and the consequences of linguistic decline on belonging and identity.
The second session, presented by Dr. Mahrous Brik, Professor of Grammar, Morphology, and Linguistics, will focus on the current challenges facing Arabic in Muslim societies. Topics include the language’s presence in media, education, and digital platforms; the influence of globalization and foreign languages; and the implications of marginalization on future generations.
In the final session, Dr. Mohammed Khaled Al Rahawi, Associate Professor at Qatar University’s College of Arts and Sciences, will explore the future of Arabic in the context of cognitive and digital transformations. He will also discuss the language’s potential in renewing Islamic thought and advancing scientific and intellectual progress.
Awqaf views this seminar as a vital cultural contribution to the broader movement to preserve and promote the Arabic language, recognizing it as essential to the revival and advancement of the Muslim world.
