The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), in collaboration with Rafeeq, welcomed more than 10,000 first-grade students across government schools yesterday through the launch of the “First Step” initiative, coinciding with the beginning of the 2026–2027 academic year.
Implemented as part of the national back-to-school campaign, the initiative aims to support 10,700 newly enrolled first-grade pupils in 103 government primary schools throughout Qatar. Students received welcome gifts and educational supplies alongside encouraging messages designed to help them start their school journey with confidence.
MoEHE Undersecretary Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi officially launched the initiative during visits to Al Rashad Model School for Boys and Al Bayan First Primary School for Girls. Joining him were Rafeeq CEO Abdullah Thamer Al Hemeidi and several ministry representatives.
During the visits, Dr. Al Nuaimi toured classrooms and met first-grade students as they experienced their first day of school, personally presenting them with “First Step” gift packages.
The programme created a positive and energetic atmosphere, helping children begin their educational experience with enthusiasm and excitement. According to the ministry, the initiative is designed to ensure that students enjoy a welcoming introduction to school life while easing their transition into the educational environment.
The effort also seeks to build a sense of belonging from the first day and strengthen the perception of schools as safe, supportive and engaging places for learning and personal development.
MoEHE said the initiative reflects its commitment to prioritising student wellbeing and creating an educational environment that inspires engagement from the outset of a child’s academic journey.
Dr. Al Nuaimi stated that the ministry aims to ensure every child attending school for the first time feels appreciated, supported and warmly welcomed. He described schools as a “second home” where students should find care, security and encouragement in addition to knowledge and learning.
He added that the initiative highlights the value of cooperation between public institutions and private-sector partners in supporting education and promoting social responsibility. Such collaboration, he noted, contributes to preparing future generations capable of advancing Qatar’s continued development.
For his part, Rafeeq CEO Abdullah Thamer Al Hemeidi said the company was proud to participate in the initiative, emphasising that supporting educational and community programmes forms an important part of its national commitment as a Qatari company.
Al Hemeidi described the initiative as an opportunity to take part in a significant milestone for thousands of children beginning their educational journeys. He added that helping students feel welcomed and cared for while bringing joy to their first school experience represents an investment in their future and helps create lasting positive memories.
