The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) of Qatar has launched its annual awareness campaign in schools, aimed at fostering a culture of human rights among students and enhancing understanding of individual rights and responsibilities within society.
The initiative targets primary, preparatory, and secondary schools across the country and forms part of NHRC’s ongoing efforts to expand public awareness of human rights principles. The campaign includes a structured training programme that introduces students to the committee’s mission and vision, alongside educational sessions covering fundamental human rights concepts.
Activities under the campaign began at the Fourth Assalam School, where students took part in specialised lectures addressing child protection in the digital environment. The sessions highlight safe and responsible online behaviour, reflecting growing concerns related to digital transformation and increased internet use among young people.
NHRC’s Director of Programmes and Education, Hamad Al Hajri, said the initiative falls within the committee’s 2024–2030 strategy, particularly its objective of broadening human rights awareness across all segments of society. He noted that targeting schools is based on the belief that education at an early age plays a crucial role in preventing future rights violations.
School administrators have welcomed the campaign, praising its relevance and impact. Safaa Abu Nada, Head of the Fourth Assalam School, said the programme had effectively raised students’ awareness of digital rights and encouraged responsible online conduct.
As part of the initiative, Abdulrahman Al Hammadi, NHRC’s Head of Studies and Research, delivered an in-depth lecture on protecting children in the digital space. He warned that the rapid expansion of online interaction presents legal and ethical challenges, noting that the digital world transcends geographical and cultural boundaries.
Al Hammadi stressed the importance of equipping children with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate digital environments safely, in line with international human rights standards.
The NHRC affirmed that the campaign will continue across schools nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to promoting human rights education and awareness among younger generations.
