Qatar Reads, a flagship initiative of Qatar National Library, has brought classical Arabic literature to the forefront through the 2025 edition of the One Book, One Doha Festival. This year’s event, held from November 2 to 15 at Katara Cultural Village (Building 18), centers on Maqamat Al-Hariri, a renowned literary work celebrated for its eloquence, wit, and cultural significance.
The festival transforms Maqamat Al-Hariri into an immersive cultural experience, offering a unique platform for readers of all ages to engage with the text in innovative and interactive ways. The initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the Arabic language and literature, while promoting reading as a cornerstone of cultural identity.
Tan Huism, Executive Director of Qatar National Library, highlighted the festival’s broader cultural impact. “The One Book, One Doha Festival serves as a dynamic catalyst for engaging with our rich Arab intellectual heritage, proving that our classical texts are both timeless and directly relevant to today’s generation,” she said.
She added, “By making the festival interactive, we did more than celebrate a book; we highlighted the beauty of the Arabic language and invited all citizens and residents to join this cultural and educational discovery.”
The festival features a wide range of interactive zones tailored for families, students, educators, and the general public. Among the highlights is the Desert of Knowledge, a central activity hub featuring challenges such as the “Dotless Arabic Challenge” and the bilingual “Proverbs of Al-Hariri” reconstruction, designed to inspire linguistic creativity and teamwork.
Another standout attraction is The Secrets of the Maqamat, an escape room experience sponsored by Seashore Group. Drawing inspiration from the clever protagonist of Maqamat Al-Hariri, the activity blends literary puzzles with themes of sustainability and environmental awareness, aligning with the sponsor’s commitment to social responsibility and cultural engagement.
The Literary Souq offers a vibrant cultural marketplace, showcasing publishers such as Dar Nabjah, HBKU Press, and Dar Basma. Meanwhile, the Qatar Reads booth provides information on the Family Reading Program and offers curated reading packages to encourage community participation.
Visitors are also invited to engage with the Debate Wall, an interactive space where individuals of all ages can reflect on and vote for contemporary questions, fostering dialogue and critical thinking.
The One Book, One Doha Festival continues to serve as a bridge between the past and present, reaffirming the enduring relevance of Arabic literature and its role in shaping cultural identity and community connection.
