Qatar is stepping up its efforts to create a smarter, safer, and more sustainable transportation system, with major initiatives aimed at supporting economic development and improving residents’ quality of life.

A key element of this vision is the Transportation Master Plan for Qatar 2050, which will guide future investments in transport infrastructure, expand road and public transit networks to accommodate urban growth, and address evolving mobility demands. The plan also places a strong emphasis on sustainability through the promotion of environmentally friendly transport solutions, lower carbon emissions, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced financial sustainability achieved through demand management measures and public-private partnerships.

Speaking on the country’s progress, Eng. Nayla Khaled Al Nuaimi, In-Charge of the Road Affairs Department at the Ministry of Transport, said the autonomous electric taxi initiative highlights Qatar’s commitment to integrating advanced smart mobility technologies that deliver safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation services.

Al Nuaimi noted that the successful completion of the project's trial phase confirmed the readiness of the necessary operational and technical systems. She added that this achievement sets the stage for the next phase, which will introduce fully driverless operations in cooperation with the relevant authorities.

The first phase of the project, launched in August 2025, followed more than 2,500 test journeys. The trials achieved an operational success rate exceeding 94 percent without human intervention, while also recording strong levels of user satisfaction, despite the presence of a safety officer onboard the vehicles.

She further explained that the Ministry of Transport continues to broaden the use of smart mobility solutions through artificial intelligence-driven traffic management systems, advanced monitoring networks that rely on cameras and sensors, integrated digital platforms connecting Doha Metro, buses, taxis, and limousine services, as well as real-time passenger information systems.

These initiatives form part of Qatar’s broader strategy to build a resilient and future-ready transportation network that meets the country’s long-term development and sustainability objectives.
